Historiography of Early Modern Ottoman Europe (HOE) Database

https://hoe.ub.rub.de/index

HOE is a collection of meta-data focusing on historiographical writing of Early Modern Ottoman Europe (1500-1800). It brings together published and unpublished primary sources (chronicles, histories, hagiographies, inscriptions, maps…), as well as secondary material (“Main Section”). It also offers information on specific collections, as well as a wide variety of references to tools and resources useful to those navigating the research questions of Early Modern historiography (“Tools Section”).

HOE provides information on the author(s), title(s), contents, manuscript(s) and edition(s) of the main sources related to the topic. Regarding these sources, it offers bibliographical meta-data in the form of both library-specific and internationally recognized identifiers. This information is augmented by links to online resources and related literature. Thus, HOE allows for quick and comprehensive overview of where to find primary sources, who was/is connected to their generation and proliferation, which secondary sources in which editions, printed and online there are, etc.… It is a research tool for easy, comprehensive, quality reference.

You can switch between the Main Section and the Tool Section at will. Different facets and filters will help you refine your search.

If you are looking for specific works, you can use the search function to find its title, transcribed title or translated title. In each entry, different pieces of related information and links are made available, depending on the type of source you have selected. And in every case, there will be links to its related sources, which allow you to quickly and precisely access a source’s siblings or derivates.

West African Arabic Manuscript Database

West African Arabic Manuscript Project

[First posted in AMIR 5 May 2012, updated 30 March 2018]
UPDATE: The database platform has been updated. First several thousand digital copies of manuscripts will go on-line this summer [2018]

AMMS is a bi-lingual database that was developed at the University of Illinois in the late 1980s to describe a collection of Arabic manuscripts in southern Mauritania (Boutilimit). It subsequently has been used to catalogue seven other West African collections including the manuscript libraries at the Institut Mauritanien de Recherche Scientifique, Northwestern University, and the Centre Ahmad Baba in Timbuctu.  Currently (during 2011-2) print catalogues from West Africa published by al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation are being added to it. For more information on the activities and publications of the Foundation and these catalogues visit http://www.al-furqan.com
The database has a search engine designed to identify manuscripts and authors when only fragmentary information is available, in Arabic or Roman script, for records now in excess of 23,000. Experimental linkage of digital images of manuscript texts to the records is currently underway.
The database and the AMMS cataloguing tool are publicly available at no cost to users. The AMMS software for cataloging is free and can be downloaded for local use. Thirty-odd fields in Arabic and English cover all the descriptors normally employed in manuscript work and users may customize the input fields for the needs of particular collections. We encourage the inclusion of newly-catalogued material into the main data base; please contact the editors.

KITAB: Knowledge, Information Technology, and the Arabic Book

KITAB: Knowledge, Information Technology, and the Arabic Book: Studying the formation and development of the written Arabic tradition with digital methods
KITAB provides a digital tool-box and a forum for discussions about Arabic texts. We wish to empower users to explore Arabic texts in completely new ways and to expand the frontiers of knowledge about one of the world’s largest and most complex textual traditions.
We are leading with a tool that detects how authors copied from previous works. Arabic authors frequently made use of past works, cutting them into pieces and reconstituting them to address their own outlooks and concerns. Now you can discover relationships between these texts and also the profoundly intertextual circulatory systems in which they sit.
Our most recent work has involved gathering statistics on such reuse across the tradition. This includes the extent and precision of reuse, and where it does and does not occur. We are also developing new visualisations that show the relationships between authors, books, and the ideas that they contain. Equally importantly, we are building the corpus of texts upon which our research is based, and making use of our recent and pioneering work on Optical Character Recognition...
